The Charleston Gazette -- At 32.2 cents a gallon, West Virginia's gasoline excise tax adds several dollars to the cost of a fill-up - but also provides nearly 60 percent of the state's share of state Road Fund dollars. "If we would have a loss of that money, we couldn't pave as many miles of roads, and we couldn't fix potholes as quickly," Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox said of the often-raised idea of cutting the gas tax. For the 2008-09 budget, the gas tax is projected to bring in $380 million - by far the largest source of state funding for highway construction and repair. All other state vehicle taxes, registration and fees will account for less than $258 million.

	Gasoline taxes need to go to road repair and not anywhere else. The states need to make sure of that and not siphon off the funds to somewhere else.

	w4kh makes a lot of sense. ____ Don20 wrote: "This big tax has not always been there, what did they do before.???" They used to drive on dirt roads, drive miles to cross rivers (or drive through smaller streams), etc.

	If you've ever driven thru' WV, you'd still wonder where the tax money goes. 40 miles of bad road turns into about 40,000 in WV.

	The biggest problem I have is does all the money collected go towards the roads and road maintenace? To many times where told this yet some how the money ends up in some other non road prodject.

	Interesting idea cutting the gas tax... let's see how it would work... oh, yes... the people who drive the least efficient vehicles (Hummers, 4x4 crewcab pickups, all the like) would gain the greatest benefit, would then be encouraged to drive even more, and even less efficiently; and, let us not forget that these vehicles, being heavier and driven more aggressively also do the most damage and wear to roads and bridges, so a cut to the gas tax would make for more potholes, more pavement cracks and bumps, and provide less money to fix them... What a splendid idea.... NOT! Tax gasoline and use the funds for alternative energy research and development... and fixing the highways... let people who choose to drive ineficient vehicles pay their share of keeping the roads drivable for the rest of us

	West Virginia's tax is second highest in the country - Washington has the highest. Michigan's is only 19 cents per gallon regular, 15 per gallon diesel. We are ranked 34th out of 50. This is a flat tax, so no matter how high the prices, the same amount per gallon goes for taxes. So, every year, the amount Road Commissions get in funding stays the same (or even goes down--the higher the gas prices, the less gas people buy), while the costs to maintain the roads goes up. They still have to purchase fuel at the skyrocketing rates, and everything else goes up as well, i.e. gravel, signs, culverts, etc.

	I think Robert Byrd would find a way to get money for WV roads even if WV eliminated its gas tax.

	Here in MN they just raised the gas tax (this month) by 5 cents. They say it's to goto the roads, but at a min. 40% of all gas tax goes to Mass Transit "issues". And I am in favor of mass transit, but it has to be good mass transit. Not simply running empty busses around town.

	Too bad that's not the case here...even with an add'l fixed levy added to gas only 1% of taxes collected go to roads - and it shows. This winter pot-holes were measured at times in metres (think one was 2.5 x 1.5 metres or over 7' x 4.5' - large enough to stop using the term pothole).

	Road gas taxes were instituted here a long time ago. Taxes go up and the roads crumble.
