Sunflower DNA map could yield fuel

Associated Press via MSNBC -- SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A $10.5 million research project aimed at mapping the DNA sequence of sunflowers could one day yield a towering new variety for both food and fuel.

Researchers envision crossbreeding a standard sunflower with the Silverleaf species out of Texas to produce a hybrid with bright yellow flowers bursting with tasty seeds and thick stalks filled with complex sugars that can be turned into ethanol.

no Ethanol Crops only from waste if at all. No destroying more forest to plant crops for Ethanol prod. Destroy fields planted for ethanol &m Plant trees, Will do more good for pollution Than using Ethanol.

Ethanol - unless perhaps there are cars that are designed to run on straight ethanol is a total waste that should be banned !!
In gas, it decreases MPG by more than the percentage of ethanol in the fuel.
It also damages fuel delivery systems and engines.

10 million is cheap for a research project.
the Science alone is worth that.

on the down side, Ethanol made from cane grass is more mature than some new sunflower stalk, and ConAgra has done all they can to shut that down. This has to fight the Democratic politics of special interests. Tom Harkin, Democrat, will never let a good alternate to Corn ethanol on the market, but the US tax payer can pay for all kinds of research.

Isn't ethanol corrosive? Doesn't it burn with fewer BTUs per gallon? Doesn't it burn with more carbon emissions? So why are we stll using it?

I really do not think ethanol made from corn has more of an impact on the economy and food chain than sunflowers will, so anything but corn would be better.

If this article proves true, we all may play a part in producing tomorrow's energy by having a home garden producing tomorrow's fuel.

NOW........if we could =ONLY= get every vehicle to RuN efficiently and keep all necessary parts lubricated like they need & currently get using petroleum products (diesel & gasoline)-- Just by using ETHANOL -- Then we'd have it made!!

Big Deal! So Ethanol "burns"....the homework still isn't "finished"!!

Science has the objective to look for answer for new problems.

This answer may still be under great question.

If this had decent odds of paying off it would be funded by private industry for profit. Since it's not, these researchers with grandiose ideas need to get their multi-million $ in funding from the government who don't have to ensure that these projects will be profitable. They just take the money from the citizens.

I wouldn't be too enamored of the glowing promises of how great this may be some decades in the future. They have to play it up to get those millions of dollars.

Shades of George Washington Carver. This definitely beats using corn for ethanol.

Just one of the hundreds of other costly research projects we'll never see the results to, though. Even if it does work out, ethanol has been long proven as a joke for everyday use.

Must be affordable to be practical.
